The Future of Cinema? RED Brings Z-Mount to V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X

RED just made a big move—one that filmmakers have been speculating about since Nikon acquired the company last year. The RED V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X cinema cameras are now available with Nikon’s Z-mount, marking the first time RED has released a first-party lens mount on its cameras. This is a huge step forward for both brands and brings some key benefits for filmmakers who want more lens options, better autofocus, and a more seamless workflow.

But does this actually make RED’s cameras better? And what does it mean for cinematographers looking to future-proof their setup? Let’s break it down.

What’s New with RED and Z-Mount?

When RED first introduced the V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X, they launched with Canon’s RF mount, which remains an option. But with Nikon now in the mix, the Z-mount version is designed to provide even more flexibility. Nikon’s mirrorless mount is known for its wide diameter and short flange distance, making it one of the most adaptable mounts available today. With the move to Z-mount, RED users now get access to Nikon’s expanding lineup of high-quality lenses, including the recently announced Nikkor Z 28-135mm F/4 Power Zoom—built with video production in mind.

One of the biggest advantages of the Z-mount is its shallow flange distance, which makes it incredibly adaptable. Not only can you use Nikon’s Z lenses, but the mount also allows for easy adaptation to other lens systems, including Nikon’s F-mount, Sony E-mount, and various cinema lenses with the help of RED’s new Z-to-PL adapter packs.

Autofocus Gets a Major Upgrade

One of the more exciting aspects of this announcement is how the switch to Z-mount has allowed RED to improve autofocus performance. Autofocus on RED cameras has always been somewhat secondary to their image quality and codec innovations, but that’s changing with this new partnership.

RED has used phase detection autofocus (PDAF) in its cameras since the original Komodo, but Nikon has been refining this technology for decades. The result? RED cameras with Z-mount lenses now feature more precise autofocus with less “hunting.” While firmware update 2.0 improves autofocus across all versions of the V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X, Z-mount users will see additional enhancements because of deeper integration between Nikon’s lenses and RED’s camera systems.

RED has also introduced more advanced autofocus control. Previously, users could only switch AF on or off, but now filmmakers can fine-tune autofocus sensitivity, allowing for smoother focus pulls. Z-mount users also get access to Nikon’s smooth aperture control, which allows for incremental iris adjustments rather than rigid third-stop changes. This is a game-changer for those who need precise exposure adjustments while filming.

What Else Is Different?

Besides autofocus, RED’s Z-mount cameras offer a few other notable improvements:

  • Lens Compatibility – Filmmakers can use native Nikon Z lenses, F-mount glass via the FTZ adapter, and PL-mount cinema lenses with RED’s Z-to-PL adapter packs.

  • Electronic ND Options – The optional Z-to-PL adapter pack with an electronic ND filter provides 2-7 stops of light reduction, adjustable in 1/4, 1/3, or full-stop increments.

  • Expanded Control Features – Nikon’s customizable control rings allow users to adjust settings directly from the lens, providing a more intuitive shooting experience.

What About Existing RED Users?

If you already own a V-Raptor [X] or Komodo-X with an RF mount, RED is offering a conversion service to switch to Z-mount. The cost is $‎3,315.00  for the V-Raptor [X] and $‎3,120.00 for the Komodo-X.

Additionally, RED is bringing back its trade-in program, allowing owners of older RED DSMC, Raven, Scarlet-W, DSMC2, or Ranger cameras to trade them in for credit towards a new RED V-Raptor [X] or Komodo-X Z-mount camera.

The Future of RED and Nikon

This move signals the start of a deeper collaboration between RED and Nikon. It’s not just about putting a Nikon mount on a RED camera; it’s about integrating the strengths of both brands to create a new generation of cinema tools. RED is calling this the beginning of its Z Cinema Series, which means we can likely expect more co-developed products in the future.

For filmmakers, this is an exciting shift. Nikon’s Z-mount opens up new creative possibilities while bringing RED’s legendary image quality into a more adaptable system. If you’ve been considering investing in a RED camera but wanted more flexibility with lenses and autofocus, the Z-mount versions of the V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.
